Hours of Service (HOS) compliance has become one of the biggest concerns for commercial fleets. In fact, it’s the number one industry concern, according to a recent survey of more than 4,000 trucking industry executives by the American Transportation Institute.
The electronic logging device mandate was also listed as one of the ten top concerns of those surveyed.
When it comes to HOS, many fleets have at least some drivers that must log their hours. Even companies with drivers who may not go outside the 100-mile radius are looking at HOS for compliance. Some want Hours of Service because they believe it will be required for even the short haulers at some point. Some want to be able to monitor all drivers in a consistent way. With new regulations for electronic HOS logging devices just around the corner – actually, it’s not a matter of if, but when – many fleets are being proactive about adding this functionality.
A key component of a compliant HOS system is GPS tracking systems – integrated communications with the vehicle’s engine that transmits information on both vehicles and drivers that includes fuel/idling data, safety (speeding) management and vehicle health. For COMPLIANT Hours of Service information, your engine speed and odometer readings need to come directly from the vehicle. That’s the rule. To be CONFIDENTLY compliant, you must connect to an electronic device.

- Documentation to the DOT (Department of Transportation). Since the HOS device stores drivers’ last seven days of driver logs, the data you need to show the accountability of drivers is standardized and will pass the scrutiny of a roadside inspection.
- Through a DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report). For pre- and post-trip inspections, the driver documents any problems found in the inspection and certifies that the vehicle is safe to drive before they take it out on the road.
- Visibility at the depot. You as an owner or manager can see from the depot everything that happens in the vehicle, providing accountability to the company.
